On Eisley and Success in the Music Business

One of my friends at wb (a high-up) once referred to Eisley as "the little train that could". I know he meant well but I would never characterize this band as this huffing/puffing little engine trying to climb a steep mountain but I can certainly attest to their level of perseverance and commitment to what they're doing.

I think it does take moxie but Eisley is not merely trying... they are being. Sure - the business side of this can be discouraging but you don't give up on what you are/who you are just because things are tough along the way. I've said it many times (read exhaustive study in previous journal): this is not about status, fame, popularity, money... or even about the struggle. You don't track your success by how fast you make it up the mountain or whether you even make it to the top of the mountain. It's not how many downloads you get or how many "next big thing" articles they write about you. It's not about whether Rolling Stone thinks you suck or if they think you are the "new god's of new metal" (where is Evanscence?). You don't win by being more popular than your peers.

You win by writing, recording, releasing music you love, are proud of. You get it out there however you can. You win by connecting with people through music. You win by influencing the world around you with your art. Hopefully along the way, you make the difference in someone's life. Hopefully you create a musical backtrack they can call their own. You define yourself by how you positively influence others in space and time. You use the talent God has given you.

Julian Casablancas at The Showbox

I went to see Julian Casablancas (singer for The Strokes) last night. It was really good! I was impressed with the six man band he put together to recreate all the sounds from his album. Song of the the night: River of Breaklights. It sounded incredible!

The second opening act, Strange Boys also deserve a mention. They're a five piece group from Texas and play old timey Rhythm and Blues. Here's a video of them.

I Can't Sleep

I can't sleep. It's rare that I can't sleep, but tonight my mind won't turn off. Earlier tonight, I played a big concert in Seattle. I wore a few different hats throughout the day. In the afternoon, I rushed to finish painting a large backdrop before rushing to the venue to set it up. Then set up for the music, sound check and getting in the mindset to perform. Perform. Then, switch to socializing mode. Then take down everything, pack up and go home. I had some macaroni, went on Facebook and then to bed. But after everything my mind wont shut off.

*sigh

So, I was thinking about life, my life, or anyone's life and how it's always changing. I suppose some people do what they can to avoid change, though it comes anyway. I know an older man who has lived in the same small town his whole life. He has seen his share of changes. Marrying his wife, having children, raising a family, deciding to get divorced. I wonder though, how his heart and mind have changed over time.

Lately, I've seen changes around me. They come in small ways and quickly. Part of this is because I travel quite a bit and I'm often saying hello and goodbye to friends. There are constants though. For me they are called Tommy and Bruce, Ministry, Garage Voice, my family, my God.

I don't really know what I'm getting at. I'm just writing. I'll keep writing.

It's a strange feeling when you set your heart on something, time grows but then the day comes when you realize that it's time to move on and life must change again.

And then things keep changing. For better or worse.

Last fall I lived in Marysville, WA for a couple months. Marysville is about an hour north of Seattle and it's not the nicest place. It's kind of like a big sprawl, peppered with casinos. However, I met some great people there. Tony Kevin Jr was one of them. I drew this portrait of him for the neighborhood Starbucks. It took me way too long. Sucker had to sit for like 2 hours.

Tony is about to release his debut EP entitled "I should love you, but I hate you". You can hear 2 songs from it here and pick up a copy at his EP release show on Friday, Oct 30 in Seattle at the Q Cafe.

Like most people, he looked at me with surprise on his face. The cab drove away and I was thinking, who was that? A few moments later I realized it was the boyfriend from The Devil Wears Prada.

This song, Red Light, is from The Strokes most recent album First Impressions of Earth. The album is slightly lengthy for my preference and Red Light is near the end. So, by the time I get to it I've lost some interest. But at this Parisian concert they put it like second in their set, which has given me a fresh perspective. I really dig the chorus, especially the juxtaposed guitar parts during it.

Dangerous Beef Consumption

I ate way too much beef over the weekend. First, in Portland I ate a cheddar cheese, garlic burger that was twice as thick as it should have been. And yesterday, at the Taco Bell down the street I ate a half pound beef and potato burrito, a burrito supreme (with beef), and a nacho supreme (also with beef).

And so, I wasn't too surprised when my personal private investigator told me today that I had made it onto the C.O.A.'s (Cow Association of America) top 10 most wanted list.

I thought it might be fitting (I say might because it's probably not) as my second official post to google my name as an introduction to my own life. Here goes...

Patrick Toney has been employed in a variety of administrative and instructional positions for the past 11 years. The time spent over these years has also resulted in an Academy of Health Sciences diploma in medical equipment repair (35G) from the United States Army and a B.A. and M.A. in English Literature and Composition, with an emphasis on teaching from Jackson State University.
